How to Be a Witness in Your Company's Workplace

This past week, I helped focus the discussion for our NACFC coaching call on the idea of how Christians can be effective in sharing their faith in the workplace. I hope the notes I share with you today if you were not on the call will be helpful.

  1. BE A GOOD EMPLOYEE.

    1. PRODUCTIVE AND POSITIVE The best witness is always seeing what you do by your actions and it is unlikely you will have a positive witness if you are negative influence in your company. So start by checking your attitude and how you are doing on your job FIRST! You owe it to your employer to let your boss see Jesus thru your performance on the job.

    2. WORK HABITS… If you are not sincere in your efforts to do your job in the best way possible whether in sloppy follow-up or not caring about completing your work on time, it unlikely that others will want to hear what you may want to share about Christ.

    3. TEAM PLAYER WITH STAFF AND COLLEAGUES It is okay to covet your time with family and even perhaps the protection of your time to do things the Lord is calling you to do, but if you do not have respect for the people around you and their needs, you will find witnessing hard.

  2. SUPPORT OR START A BIBLE STUDY FOR PEOPLE IN YOUR OFFICE

    1. Talk to several people including your supervisor before embarking on this but once you find there is a calling to organize it, go for it.

    2. Make sure you keep the timing of this so that it does not infringe on business hours or consume time that is owed to the company.

    3. If you are the manager, then make sure another employee who is a Christian leads the Bible study so that there is no coercion.

    4. Consult your Pastor before beginning a Bible study to seek both his counsel and also a prayer partner for the issues you will face.

  3. AFTER DISCUSSION WITH YOUR MANAGER/SUPERVISOR LET THEM KNOW THAT YOU WILL BE USING EMAIL FROM TIME TO TIME TO SHARE IDEAS WITH OTHERS.

    1. Build a network of people that wish to receive and share together information that will help build each of you up and restore why God has called you to the work you are doing.

    2. .Keep the emails concise and focused and remember the same idea of 2(b) above to not consume excessive company time in this effort.

  4. TAKE BIBLICALLY RESPONSIBLE INVESTING SERIOUSLY (THIS IS FOR FINANCIAL ADVISORS AND PROFESSIONALS WHO INFLUENCE INVESTORS)

    1. Identify mutual funds and variable annuities which you believe are good for your clients but also have solid Biblical screens to protect your investors from companies that clearly are not following God’s principles.

    2. Develop your own screens in choosing stocks, bonds, and investments for your clients that also reflect a Christian World View

    3. Make similar screens available to money managers handling managed accounts for your clients so that they also can observe your wishes for having client’s investments reflect Biblically Responsible Investments.

  5. BE A GENUINE PRAYER WARRIOR… If someone asks for prayer, stop what you are doing and pray with them now!! Check in with them from time to time to see how that family member of friend is doing and keep that concern in front of you as you pray for God’s will in that person’s life.

Although this has many aspects for people who work in the Financial Services areas of our economy, all of you in every area of life can be a witness if you adapt these principles to you work and life experiences. God bless you and those around you as we try together! dls
